Servings:

makes 1-2 pizza bases

Prep time

15 minutes for the kneading/mixing and a further 45-60 minutes for rising

Cook Time

10 – 12 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (300g) plain flour
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • ¾ cup (180ml) warm water

Instructions:

  1. Mix the dry ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the wet ingredients
Pour in the warm water and olive oil. Stir with a spoon until the mixture starts to come together into a dough.
  3. Knead the dough
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes, until smooth and stretchy.
(You can also knead in the bowl if you prefer.)
  4. Let it rise
Place the dough back in the bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 45–60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the base
Punch down the dough to release air. Shape it into one thick base or two thinner ones. Roll or stretch it to your preferred size.
  6. Top and bake
Add your favourite toppings. Bake in a hot oven (230–250°C / 445–480°F) for 10–12 minutes, or until golden and crisp.

Commonly Asked Questions

Can I make a pizza base without the yeast and rising time?

Yes you can substitute the yeast for another raising agent that doesn’t require rising time. The most common is to use baking powder which will give the base a little lift when baking. The dough will not be a chewyor airy but will form a texture much like soft flatbread.

Can I use this recipe to create a thicker base?

Absolutely – we would reccommend using the whole dough for just one pizza base and not to stretch the base too thin but leave it as thick as you’d like it. You can also let the dough rise for a further 15 minutes once shaped to achieve that thicker, airier base.

What sauces can I use as a pizza base?

Most commonly, the marina-style tomato base sauce is used made of fresh ingredients. Some other ideas are using pesto or a garlic olive oil creamy sauce.

What is the method to creating a stuffed crust pizza?

When you roll out your pizza dough, roll out an extra 2-3 cm of dough to allow for the folding of the edges. Place your stuffed crust filling around the edge and carefully fold over the crust edges and press firmly to seal. Use your fingers to pinch the dough down so that the filling does not leak out. Spread your pizza base sauce inside the stuffed crust border and add your toppings.
